SCUBA INSTRUCTOR COURSE

A Scuba Diving Instructor is a person dedicated to the motto of "Dive Safety Through Education" a person whom others look to for leadership and knowledge. At Fathom Divers we put the training first!  We hold every trainee to the highest of diving standards.  When we say "Excellence is Achieved Through Hard Work and Dedication,"  We actually mean it.  Preparedness is the key to successfully completing your Instructor Training Course.  Do your homework BEFORE you come. This course is not to be taken lightly...  We offer several ways to complete your Scuba Instructor Training Course:

Apprenticeships:
We offer continuing, year round apprenticeship training.  This development course is designed for a serious diver who wants to become an instructor, but needs to complete many core requirements first.  Apprentices' work in the shop, deck hand on the dive boat, assist with classes and dives and learn about repairs and maintenance.  All diving and prerequisite courses are rolled in to this program, as is all the required curriculum.  This program develops very well rounded industry professionals.  When our staff and the trainee feel they are ready to be evaluated, the apprentice program is complete and you will have your final Instructor evaluation done.  Apprentice programs typically last several months over the summer season or in some cases over a years time.  Our goal is to developed the BEST Instructor/Industry professional possible.

Weekend Course:
Our weekend Instructor course is for current Divemasters or Assistant Instructors who have done all the preliminary work and completed all the prerequisites and entrance tests and are ready to enroll in the Instructor course.  This course is run over 4 weekends consisting of Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.  This course is designed for those New Englanders who can not spare a full 10 days off from work at one time. Trainees need only to get 4 Fridays off!  This course starts Fridays at Noon and ends around 3pm Sunday Afternoons.  The first 3 weeks consist of the Instructor Development Phase and the 4th weekend is the final Instructor Evaluation.

10 Day Course
This week long course is for current Divemasters or Assistant Instructors who have done all the preliminary work and completed all the prerequisites and entrance tests and are ready to enroll in the Instructor course.  This course is run for 10 days straight about 10 to 12 house a day.  You will have a good since of accomplishment at the end of this one!


Prerequisites

Apprentice Program:
You must be a certified scuba diver with a minimum of 25 logged dives in varying environments and conditions. During the program, all the required courses for entrance into the Instructor Evaluation Course will be offered at special trainee  rates.  Please see below for a list of requirements to become certified as an Instructor.

Weekend and 10 Day Courses:

  • Certified Scuba Diver from any agency

  • Certified Rescue Diver from any agency

  • Certified to the Level of Divemaster or Assistant Instructor from any agency.

  • Current CPR

  • Current Oxygen Administration

  • 100 logged scuba dives in varying conditions and environments.

  • Pass a entrance test.

  • Submit a complete diving history.

  • Submit an essay detailing why you wish to become a scuba diving Instructor.

  • Medical Release form signed by a doctor.

  • 3 letters of referral. (At least one from a current scuba instructor who has worked with you).
     

It is highly recommended that you observe several basic scuba courses being taught before you come.  If possible you may ask to be an assistant and actually help the instructor during the course.  If this is not an option, just go to a local dive shop and ask to audit (watch) the course.  This will be very beneficial to you.  If you have the ability to work with a shop or instructor before you come, DO IT!

Listed below are several skill required to pass the Instructor Course.  It is highly recommended you train for them and are able to complete these skills BEFORE you come to your training course.

  • 300 yard free swim in 7 minuets or less.
  • 880 yard swim with  mask, snorkel and fins in 16 minuets or less.
  • 15 minuet treading water.
  • 75 foot underwater swim (no gear)
  • Mask, Snorkel and Fin ditch and don.
  • Scuba ditch and don.
  • Scuba Bailout
  • 100 yard scuba rescue tow.
